Merry Christmas 2011

Merry Christmas to all my canine and human friends out there.

Not a very warm morning here in Greece this Christmas Day, but good enough to get out for another walk on the beach with my people. Now just what is it that makes them want to dress me up like a "prize mutt" ?  I only tolerate it to amuse Mrs Stop'it and get the doggy chocolates afterwards.  Mind you I was lucky yesterday I heard Mrs Stop'it planning to dress me up and take me with them carol singing in Kalamata....... whoa I'd would not have liked that as it definitely would not have been seen as cool by my canine friends! I think it would have been more a case of Santa having a "cheeky red Rosie" instead of  "rosy red cheeks.......

Its dry and sunny.......

It is much better weather this morning, so the beach walk was on!  I was so excited to be able to have a good run about on the sand and once out of the new tin box I headed quickly for the beach

Some times the "governor" is so slow and fails to keep up with me, good job he is  not training for the Olympics for next year.....he'd fail!

Its odd though, this beach changes in the winter months. In the summer its nearly all sand yet every winter someone seems to bring loads and loads of pebbles then they must come back in the following summer and take them away again.......odd you humans!
I do not like running on the pebbles much though and have to carefully pick my way through them in case I twist my little paws..............................

Oh ye of little faith.....

The other day me and the "governor" were having a chat and he told me someone had made comment that they did not believe I wrote my blog and they thought he was doing it!   What a cheek I thought, as if he could write such intelligent things......
The next thing you know they'll be saying there is no such person as
Father Christmas

Bored..........................

Well I thought I had better "report in" but there really is not much happening in my household at present.  The weather is still not good and water is leaking from the sky everywhere.  That means no runs on the beach for me and my people.
The Stop'its are spending their time either in front of the picture box I use for the blog, or watching the noisy box upstairs that has people inside it.

I think I'll just make myself comfortable here..................

Its getting colder....

Winter has certainly arrived here in Greece and the rains have started. Despite what you humans think us canines do feel the cold, especially when your raised in a hot country like me......a sort of "hot dog", that's me!
My regular readers will know that I do not like getting wet, be it out in the rain, in the sea or getting washed in the shower by the "guv".  When we go out in the mornings I see lots of my doggy friends tied up and left out in the bad weather with sometimes no cover at all, and at best normally only an old barrel or similar to sleep in.
I am therefore very glad that I can snuggle down under my  blanket and keep nice and warm.

Beach & breakfast.....

It was quite warm running along the beach front this morning with Mr Stop'it despite now being mid December. As we approached my house the "guv" collected the mail from the post box and I ran off to have a good long drink of water to quench my thirst after all that running around.  I think it was just as well I did as water could be in short supply in the future if I understood the noises and expletives that Mr Stop'it made about the water bill that had just arrived!

Still I got my breakfast all the same, but I had to make sure my people did not want a share of it !

Friday 9 December 2011

Mud, Mud glorious mud..............

click photo to enlarge

A few rain storms around over the last few days so I am glad to be able to stay in. The trouble is there are just some things a girls got to do when the need arises so I do have to go out in the rain occasionally.  This presents me with a problem as my people tend to get a bit annoyed with me when I enter the house wet and shake myself dry!

Mind you its not all my fault. Mr Stop'it had a large truck of red dirty delivered a few weeks back and had it spread all over garden, now when that gets wet I get even dirtier.....so its his fault, as you can see for getting my paws and face covered in red mud!

The new tin box

Today we went off again in the new tin box on wheels, I am getting used to the "hammock" Mr Stop'it has put in the rear seat for me now, guess its not too bad and definitely better than being left at home.  The "guv" wanted an estate car with windows in the rear side sections that opened for me;  years ago Volvo made such a design, but now-a-days its impossible to find any car maker (he says) that has this design.

The new tin box looks silver in the photo, but is not. It is quite difficult for a mutt like me to describe as it seems to change colours depending on the light conditions.....then you humans say dogs are colour blind in any case!

A trip in the new car

Breakfast in Stoupa I heard Mr Stop'it say this morning. Now that meant I had to make sure I was not forgotten as I wanted another ride in the new car. Stoupa is a good hour away from us and best of all at this time of year is very quiet as most of the tourists have gone away. So off we set.

Whilst my people tucked into a good English breakfast (despite it coming with an apology for a sausage), one of the local pesky felines tried to make friends with me.  Uh, I stuck my nose in the air.....I'm not letting the side down and going to speak to her. However unbelievably Mr Stop'it gave her a bit of MY sausage.  If this happens again I'll have to sort him out!

Got it wrong !

Being a Greek dog sometimes I do have trouble understanding English I guess.  Let me explain.......
When my people returned after a few days away in the U.K. I heard Mr Stop'it say he had brought me a ham-hock back.   YIPPEE I thought, I love bacon..I want it, I want it!  The problem was it never seemed to materialised. Now I know why.......it was a HAMMOCK !!!!!!

Some time back I told you the "guv" was looking at a new car for the misses, and the other day it arrived. The problem is I tend to make a bit of a mess with my loose blond hairs in the car (why they have to black carpets and seats beats me), so when my people were in the UK they bought me a "hammock" that stretches across the rear seats between the headrests.  Well its better than being left at home when they go out and I have my own seat belt and harness for safety; buts it not as much fun as sticking your head out the window in the wind and barking at people as I go past........................

Wednesday 30 November 2011

Food parcels.....

Now as I said my people cleared off without me to the UK for nearly two whole weeks. You see whilst I get taken on the ferry they have never taken me on the airplane, Mr Stop'it says its just far too expensive and traumatic for me.  I really can't see why I can't ride in the cabin seats with them though on the aircraft, I am very good at sitting in a car seat and don't see much difference!

Any how at least they came back with lots of food goodies for me which they can not buy in Greece.  By what I see I may just have enough to last me until I get to go to Britain with them next May!

Monday 28 November 2011

They're back......

Well I have had a busy two weeks as the people who I look after left me at my friends Pal's house whilst they went off. Pal's people do look after me very well and every morning we went out for a long walk across fields and in the woods. I also met some other canine friends on our walks which we could play with. However, you see Pal is younger than me and I still have to teach him a thing or two.  He is getting better at barking and pretending to attack humans that pass his house, but he still is not as quick to react as I am.  Its actually great fun as many more humans walk pass his house than mine, and I love frightening the local Greeks!  Mind you I think Pal's people sometime get annoyed with us and we get told off.  Then we have our own back on them and chase through the garden wrecking their shrubs............

Now I'm back in my house and totally tired out, so I am going to have a nice long sleep

Lest we forget.....

I wear my poppy with pride.  I know Remembrance Day is about remembering humans that have given their lives in war time so we may live free today, but being canine I must ask you also to remember all of my ancestors that served and gave their lives as well.  Below I have attached some very interesting articles that many may not have considered.  My ancestors served the war effort in many, many ways often going places where humans could not, often sacrificing their lives to save that of their masters........

No fireworks for me..............

Well this is another odd custom you humans have I must say.  Celebrating by burning a "guy" and spending lots of money buying things to set on fire and make loud noises. If you want to burn something, why not buy lots of wood and coal and then I can benefit too by sleeping in front of a nice fire instead of sitting here thinking of all my poor canine friends back in Gt Britain being frightened to death by noisy fireworks......

I think it even more odd you all celebrate the death of poor old Guy Fawkes, after all he only tried to do what lots of you Brits want to do now

Burn the government out !!!!!!!

Its Howl-o-ween

Well I guess it going to be great fun tonight, so I thought I would get into the howl-0-ween spirit with some of my mates. Thats me on the far left.  Those of you who read my blog on a regular basis will know just how much I hate humans with sticks (that is because in my early life before Mr & Mrs Stop'it adopted me I was beaten so much), so tonight any humans that come my way with broom sticks or the like will be very sorry!

Oh yes and if they are a bit big for me to handle I can always call in support from my mate Pal..............

K9 for F1........

Another good start to a sunny day and romp around the beach, even Mrs Stop'it joined me on the beach this morning.  After my run about the "Guv" had lots of business things to do so I got left in the car alone a few times.  Its OK this weather as its not too hot for me, one thing thank goodness my people are always careful of especially out here in Greece.  When they do leave me alone though I "break through" the plastic partition Mr Stop'it has built to keep me in the rear, that way I can pretend to be the driver and sit in the Guv's seat. Mind you I do get a telling off when he gets back!

This lifeguard thing I think I could take seriously, for my Greek friends have a close look at my boat and you'll see what I mean!

Well this morning was quite hot for late October and off we went as normal for our beach walk along the coast at Velika. It has been a while since I had a good sniff around this bit of beach as the "Guv" usually goes to a part of the beach a bit further along. Since I was last there the farmer has dug some big deep trenches, I think its to stop locals driving up and cutting down the trees on the beach in the winter for firewood.  Good job I say because if it continued like last year all my male canine friends would have "nowhere to go!"

Monday 24 October 2011

If you go down to the woods...........

click photo to enlarge

A good run around in the woods this morning with the "guv" but not a cat in sight to chase!  Some things though I just do not get. Humans are always on about us canines, not allowed in there, not allowed here etc. etc.  Some of you say us dogs make a mess.......uh you should see the mess left in the woodland by you humans.  Plastic bottles, cans, loads of paper and some other unmentionables all over the place where cars or your mobile kennels have been.  Now us canines might get caught short now and then but we don't make that kind of mess!

Beach watch babe.......

In my earlier postings you will recall how I chased the criminal element in Greece after I thought she had stolen the walking stick. Mr Stop'it was none too pleased with me as apparently for a successful "collar" you have to say you seen the crime committed and not make assumptions.  Oh well the end of my Police dog career I think.......
So today I've tried another occupation as Lifeguard-dog.  The only problem I can see is that I hate water, so if I keep watch from near my tower I guess the best way to prevent drownings is to chase the humans away BEFORE they get into the sea!  As you can see I've done a pretty damn good job so far.......

As a side thought I wonder if I can have a couple of puppies like Pamela Anderson had ?

I HATE cats!

Boats & buildings........

click on to enlarge

Another good outing for me today.  It started with a visit to Analypsi beach where I was allowed to have a good run around.  However Mr Stop'it keeps very near me as last May one of my good canine friends was poisoned here. (see blog post earlier this year) Mrs Stop'it took some pictures of some rather small turtles swimming about and basking in the sunshine on some discarded wooden pallets in the water inlet just behind me.
I was far more interested in the dogs barking near by and the cow that was munching its way through the bamboo growing around.

Later we went on a long drive to look at Ancient Messini. I heard my people saying that is was built in 4th century BC with what was then state of the art techniques to withstand Spartan incursions, but all the workers were on strike due to Greek austerity measures.  Uh.. no wonder its still not finished !!!

Wednesday 12 October 2011

Yes ! The beach is mine again.....

One good thing about October and the slight change in the weather is that most of the tourists have gone home!  October also means for me the freedom of the beaches again.  So this morning I had a good old sniff about and run on the beach.
The "Guv" always takes Mrs Stop'it out for an airing with us, but she tends to sit on a chair on the beach and read her book whilst me and the "Guv" have a walk and look around.  Saying that there was not much washed up this morning and the foreign tourists beach hut made of drift wood and palm leaves is slowly getting broken up by the wind and waters.

Now I think I remember reading something like that somewhere!

And every one that heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them not, shall be likened unto a foolish man, which built his house upon the sand:

Friday 7 October 2011

I want to be a police dog !

The other day I told you about the fun I have barking very loudly from the car window as we pass old Greek ladies dressed in black with walking sticks. Well I have decided what is even more fun, chasing old Greek ladies that "nick" walking sticks !
Now you can guess this does not go down well with Mr & Mrs Stop'it but I have told them I am in training because I want to be a police dog and catch the criminals......

Thursday 6 October 2011

......as I was saying

Well I know it was a long drive and I might be a bit of a "mutt", or so Mr Stop'it calls me from time to time but I thought the Eiffel Tower was in France and I am sure we did not go that far!

Wednesday 5 October 2011

Off for a picnic.....

I noticed this morning as Mr Stop'it was giving me my early morning brush down that the Mrs's of the household was busy in the kitchen...now I know that means food!   I went in to investigate and sure as my name is Rosie there was lots of food being wrapped up in tin foil, what more some of it was mine!

This can only mean one thing, we're off on a trip......yippee.

So with the tin box on wheels loaded up, me in the back we set off. It really is great fun getting my head out of the window, wind in my face and barking at all the other dogs I see and of course frightening little old Greek ladies dressed in black as we pass them with a great big   B  A  R  K.
I'll show you tomorrow where we went........

28 dogs killed !

Some time back on my blog I told you about the danger me and my canine friends risk in Greece with poison being laid on open land to kill us....well things have hit a new low!  I post below a letter from a cam-board friend that is self explanatory.....please help.

Today I received a sad email from the kind people who run the Melios Animal Shelter in Gythio. Somebody went onto their premises twice this week and poisoned 28 of the dogs they had rescued and were caring for. As you can imagine they were devastated to see their poor dogs lying dead.

They do a valuable job, with very little money (like our local animal welfare organisation, KAWs) to help the abandoned, often badly treated animals they rescue.

They are appealing to the Mayor of Gythio to help and support them to stop such acts of cruelty to animals and to help them raise funds to carry on. They have asked as many people as possible to email the Mayor to ask him to help their cause.

It would be a big help if anyone here who is, as I was, shocked by this could write to the mayor in support of Melios Animal Shelter. His email address is:mkoliakou@1315.syzefxis.gov.gr
Your support would be very much appreciated by the Melios team, Vasiliki, Litsa, Jenny, Judi, Jolly, Mali, Henia and Els.

Its back to normal

Well Pal's people returned from their holiday yesterday and my mate Pal went back home. Whilst it is a bit lonely again without him, the Stop'its routine is now back to normal. So this morning after my brush down off we went to the beach for a run around.  The only trouble this time of year is that the leaves are starting to fall off the trees and also all the spikey thorns! Yes, I got two caught in my paws, but a quick limp to Mr Stop'it and he soon sorted me out !

Wednesday 14 September 2011

I'm on the carpet !

This is just not good enough !  I told you the other day I thought Pal was muscling in on my home territory, well its getting serious now. After a hard nights protection work together, making sure the Stop'its are keep safe from all the wild animals out here in Greece like goats, donkeys, snakes, mice, tortoises, pine martens and some of the villagers he has the cheek to rest in comfort.  Me I'm on the carpet !

Romeo and Juliet, Act 2 scene 2

Sometimes I worry about about my mate Pal, but this time I think he has really lost it.  So I'm sitting quietly on the balcony and he comes around the front barking lines from Will Shakespeare's Romeo & Juliet.
Now just what can he do for me?    He's seen the dog doctor too !

Sunday 11 September 2011

He's muscling in !

As there is no sign of Pal's people returning it looks like I'm going to have to share my abode with Pal as it appears he is staying. Now I do not mind, as I often stay at his house when the Stop'its go away, however there are a few things I draw the line at. So a few house rules

1) My food is MY food
2) I get brushed in the morning first
3) I lead in the all barking
4) No peeing on the balcony
5) Garden lizards are MY additional treat, no eating them.
6) Postmen, visitors and neighbours are fair game to both, but I get first bite

However even laying the law down to him he has muscled in on Mr Stop'it, I'm worried I even caught them asleep together!

Friday 9 September 2011

Pal got left behind

By now all of you will know about my friend Pal.  Well the other day my people took me around his house to see him, whilst they just sat and talked human rubbish Pal and I had a right good time playing chase and barking at passing girlies!
Now what I was unaware of  was that he was planning a visit to my house as well, and last Wednesday he arrived with the people he looks after. As I had been to the dog doctor a couple of days earlier I was still not in top form and it was a hot afternoon so we just rested whilst the humans talked. Soon Pals people were off but disaster......they forgot to take Pal !

Wednesday 7 September 2011

Off I go again...

Mr Stopit was up very early this morning and after my brush down off he went with the motorised "whipping stick" to cut all the long grass down in my garden. Well I thought that was it, no outings today. However after he finished he disappeared into the "rain room", reappeared again ready to go out...YES I thought now don't forget me!
Only a short journey today though, a brief run around near the beach and a visit to the cake shop in Petalidi.....mmmmm they don't sell doggie biscuits!

My new medal

I have decided you humans have some very funny ideas on awarding us canines medals!

This morning started like any other summer morning, up about 7am, breakfast and my grooming on the balcony by Mr Stop'it. Later, out for our morning drive and my run around; but then we drove to the dreaded dog doctor!  Now despite her being very nice to me on the surface I always seem to "be in for it" once I get put up on the examination table. I don't mind her checking all my joints or even having a look and checking I have washed my ears out, in fact I can even tolerate the cold stethoscope on my underparts, but the thermometer and where she insists she has to put it "OUCH".

As I expected I was also going to get "stuck"......I hate injections. Its all done to keep you fit and well Mrs Stop'it tells me. I was not blooming ill to start with I try and tell her!

The the dog doctor writes something in my passport, stamps it and I get a bravery medal.........Last years medal was silver (see blog), this years is gold so I must be improving !!!!!

Not much happening....

Well I guess from my absence you all can tell there is not much happening at the "Stop'it's" household.  In saying that we all did go out the other day to Koroni for mid day lunch, well at least my people ate I just got cold water.  The human who brought my people their food bowls stated she liked me, but then again who wouldn't? As you can see I had my photograph taken whilst patiently waiting under the table for my people to finish their food.

For those of you who are not familiar with this area I have put a picture of Koroni on for you to look at. It is a small fishing village about 30 minutes from my kennel.
